For many people, the day begins with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. But beyond familiar espresso and filter coffee, beans from different parts of the world offer distinctive flavors, unusual production methods and stories of their own.

As coffee lovers mark International Coffee Day on Oct. 1, it is a good time to look beyond the usual morning brew and discover some of the world’s most unusual coffee varieties. From beans processed through the digestive systems of animals to rare cultivars known for their floral aromas, these coffees offer distinctive tastes and production stories.

Kopi Luwak: Unusual coffee tradition

When it comes to exotic coffee, Indonesia’s Kopi Luwak is perhaps one of the most recognizable. Its beans are obtained from coffee cherries eaten and passed through the digestive system of the Asian palm civet, a small mammal known locally as a luwak.

During digestion, enzymes alter the beans’ acidity, contributing to a smoother profile that is often described as having chocolate and caramel notes. The unusual production process has made Kopi Luwak internationally famous, although its production has also drawn concerns over animal welfare, particularly when civets are kept in captivity.

Black Ivory: Coffee produced with elephants

Thailand’s Black Ivory Coffee is produced through another unusual animal-assisted process. In northern Thailand, coffee cherries are fed to elephants, whose digestive process breaks down proteins in the fruit and changes the flavor of the beans.

Production is highly limited. About 33 kilograms of coffee cherries are needed to produce roughly 1 kilogram of Black Ivory beans, contributing to its rarity.

Geisha: Panama’s floral coffee

For coffee lovers looking for an unusual flavor without an animal-based production process, Panama’s Geisha, also known as Gesha, offers a distinctive alternative.

The variety originated in Ethiopia but gained international recognition after being cultivated in Panama, particularly in high-altitude volcanic regions. Geisha coffee is known for its floral and fruity character, with tasting notes often associated with jasmine, bergamot, peach and Earl Grey tea.

Blue Mountain: Jamaica’s smooth coffee

Grown in Jamaica’s misty and rainy Blue Mountain region, Blue Mountain coffee is among the island’s best-known specialty products. Its production is subject to strict quality controls, while the beans are known for their mild bitterness, balanced acidity and smooth, sweet finish.

Some Blue Mountain coffee is traditionally transported in wooden barrels rather than conventional sacks, helping protect the beans during storage and transport.

Skybury: Australia’s tropical coffee

Australia’s tropical Queensland region is home to Skybury, a coffee grown using modern agricultural techniques. The coffee comes from one of the country’s established plantations and is known for its full body, with mild fruity and nutty notes.

From Indonesia and Thailand to Panama, Jamaica and Australia, these coffees show how geography, cultivation and processing can shape the flavor in a cup. For coffee drinkers, they offer a way to move beyond familiar brews and discover the diversity of the global coffee world.
