The voice of the muezzin of the Grand Mosque in Mecca, also known as Masjid al-Haram, has fallen silent. Sheikh Ibrahim bin Adel al-Madani, whose call to prayer, particularly the Fajr adhan, was well known to worshippers and visitors of the holy sanctuary, died on Monday, Sept. 21, 2026, at the age of 51. His death sparked an outpouring of grief, particularly among those who had grown accustomed to hearing his voice rise from the Grand Mosque.
As a familiar voice during daily prayers at Islam’s holiest sanctuary, Ibrahim al-Madani was one of the 24 principal muezzins of the Grand Mosque. He was particularly known for the dawn call to prayer and for reciting the takbirs during religious festivals. His voice, heard regularly by thousands of worshippers in Mecca and by millions more who follow prayers at the Haram from afar, had become part of the collective memory of Muslims around the world.
Born in Madinah in 1976, Ibrahim al-Madani grew up in a religious household. According to the Saudi Gazette, his grandfather was a memorizer of the Quran and had a strong influence on his religious upbringing. Sheikh Ibrahim also pursued academic studies in Quranic sciences.
His journey as a muezzin began in his teenage years. At the age of 15, he started calling the adhan at a neighborhood mosque in Madinah. He continued in the role during his studies, taking turns with several other muezzins from the neighborhood. After graduating from college, he stepped away from the adhan for a period while working as a teacher outside Madinah. In 1428 AH (2007-2008), he resumed calling the adhan at Al-Maddah Mosque. He was formally appointed as a muezzin at the Grand Mosque in Mecca in 1439 AH (2017-2018).
Growing up in Madinah, Sheikh Ibrahim was deeply influenced by the city’s distinctive tradition and style of the adhan. He was also familiar with the Makkan tradition from visits to Mecca with his father, during which he met Sheikh Abdul Latif Mulla, a former muezzin of the Grand Mosque and a friend of his grandfather. His experience thus brought together the two traditions of the adhan that had shaped him from an early age.
In an episode of the Ashraqat podcast, Sheikh Ibrahim recalled his first call to prayer at the Grand Mosque. He said he was deeply moved when he saw worshippers performing tawaf around the Kaaba while listening to his voice. Overcome with emotion, he asked: “Who am I that my voice should rise in this sacred place?”
According to the Khaleej Times, his final call to prayer was the Fajr adhan on Monday, Sept. 21, just hours before his death. Footage of that final adhan was subsequently widely shared on social media, along with recordings of his calls to prayer and takbirs at the Grand Mosque.
The funeral prayer was performed after the Asr prayer at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, before his burial at al-Ma‘la Cemetery. No specific cause of death had been officially announced by Saudi authorities or official channels at the time of the reports.
With the death of Ibrahim al-Madani, the Grand Mosque has lost one of the voices long associated with the Fajr adhan and the takbirs. Recordings of his voice, widely reshared following news of his death, will remain a record of his years of service delivering the call to prayer at Islam’s holiest sanctuary.
