Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani said on Wednesday he promised that one day the Kurds would have their own "independent state" in northern Iraq, and defeat the Daesh terrorist group.
Barzani made the comments in the province of Irbil during a conference organized by the ministry of economy discussing the region's economic transformation.
"The patient Kurdistan people, we know the process is hard and arduous, but I promise that we will reach our aims. We will defeat the terrorist Daesh group, and reform the industrial infrastructure," he said.
"We'll one day have our own independent state. It is of course not that easy to reach the mountain's summit, but for the future of Kurdistan, I ask all of those that live here that they be patient, united with strong self-confidence," Barzani stated.
Barzani has also touched upon the current economic situation, saying that the "unexpected" fall in oil prices in the world market, Baghdad's cutting on civil servants' payments as well as the budget of the KRG at the beginning of 2014, and finally the terrorist organization Daesh had all contributed to the downfall of the economy.
"The changes and developments in the region, pose serious threats on the Kurdistan region. We are therefore appealing from states in the international coalition for a more active and direct economic support to the region," Barzani said.
