Ten Iranian soldiers have been killed in clashes with Kurdish militants in western Iran near border with Iraq, an Iranian party member said Thursday.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Mohamed Salih, a member of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan, said that fierce clashes had broken out between Iranian soldiers and Kurdish militants in the city of Sardasht in western Iran on Tuesday.

"Ten Iranian soldiers were killed and 20 others were injured in an ambush set by the Kurdish militants," Salih said.

He said a top Iranian commander was among those killed in the violence.

An Iranian official was earlier quoted as saying that two members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards were killed and another injured in clashes in Sardasht.
