Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu is paying a visit to Brussels today to discuss the opening of new chapters in the negotiation process with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, President of European Council Donald Tusk, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini and Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn.
Besides these visits, the opening ceremony of the Justice and Development Party's (AK Party) Brussels Representative Office and a meeting with Turkish citizens from different European cities is on Davutoğlu's agenda. It is expected that 3,000 people will participate in Davutoğlu's meetings and the addresses.
The visit is of capital importance after positive messages were sent from both sides in the last few months on the possibility of opening new chapters. Emphasizing that the relationship between Turkey and the EU is a win-win situation based on mutual interests, EU Minister and Chief Negotiator Volkan Bozkır said: "Opening chapters is no longer a problem for Turkey, it is the responsibility of the EU. We will be glad if they open the chapters, but we will not, if they do not."
Despite this positive atmosphere between the two sides, the Tahşiye operation that was conducted in Dec. 14 had led to strained relations. Turkish officials slammed EU officials' attitude and statements on the operation for not understanding the details of the case and discussing it with them.
