Deputy Prime Minister Yalçın Akdoğan has stressed that the ambiguity that has lasted for a month following the elections must be removed and said "It is important to overcome the ambiguity and to be out of the woods as soon as possible."
Speaking in a televised broadcast on Kanal 24 on Sunday, Akdoğan evaluated the election results and remarked on the latest developments. Calling the electoral period an atmosphere of uncertainty for everyone, he said "The government is using an accountable approach. The government acts with responsibility so Turkey comes to no harm and without going through turbulence," and indicated that all parties should adopt the same mentality.
Pointing out that the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) is experienced in the election issue and is the best party to take the pulse of society, Akdoğan continued "We need to peruse this (post-election) scene: It was already seen in the polls that the AK Party was in between the 40-45 percent line. I have said on your [TV] program that we can receive a higher percent of the vote. Forty-one percent is a high rate; there are not many parties that have passed 40 percent in Turkish politics. If we get 43-44 percent, we may not form a government; there is a problem as such. I made the remark that if four parties exist [in Parliament], it is possible or not possible to form a government by one or two points.
"Some became perturbed. How can 276 [deputies] not be found despite receiving a high rate of the vote? There is such a problem in this system. In fact, this is the failure of the system and the construction of it. Suppose that the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) gets three points more, but it has the same amount of deputies as the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP). Isn't there something wrong here? Three points is not a few. You get three points higher but have the same number of deputies, or we receive more than 40 percent but cannot come into power alone. There is something wrong here."
Pointing to the importance of the current process, the deputy prime minister also indicated that there will be contact among the parties or snap elections might be held and the pulse of the public must be taken accurately.
Akdoğan remarked that the dialogue between parties is an absolute must and explained that the AK Party's roadmap for coalition talks will start with Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu's paying visits to every party next week. "Our dear Prime Minister gave his hand wholeheartedly. A general scene of Turkey would be painted in the first meeting. Our principles and general sensitivities will be introduced. Several talks regarding more tangible issues, context and the coalition protocol would likely be made in the next stages."
He also underlined that the AK Party does not have a red line and added "Turkey's realities and interests are our priorities."
