Following the election of Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım as chairman of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) during the party's emergency convention on May 22, a recent survey by MAK Consultancy reveals 93.8 percent of AK Party voters think the party will see increased support under Prime Minister Yıldırım's leadership. Speaking to the daily Milat on Saturday, MAK Consultancy President Mehmet Ali Kulat said that Yıldırım's election as prime minister and chairman of the party has created a positive atmosphere among AK Party supporters, as the expectations for the party have also increased. Despite false perceptions and claims that the AK Party is experiencing an intra-party crisis due to the chairmanship change, a survey by the Objective Research Center (ORC) prior to the emergency convention revealed 52.8 percent support for the AK Party.
According to MAK President Kulat, Prime Minister Yıldırım has successfully planned and completed projects, creating a positive feeling among citizens. "The people welcome Binali Yıldırım not because of his speeches but due to his accomplishments. Yıldırım has a past as a ‘doer.' … That is why the people perceive him as a solid figure," Kulat said.
The latest survey also touched on ongoing discussions concerning switching from a parliamentary to a presidential system. When participants were asked if they understood what was meant by the term "presidential system," the majority did not understand. A new survey indicates that 54.8 percent of participants believe that with the Yıldırım era and changes in the AK Party, a de facto presidential system is currently in place. The latest ORC survey also shows strong public support (58.4 percent) for a presidential system, an increase from 57 percent in March.
