Suspect in Turkish consulate attack in Amsterdam refuses to talk, Dutch police say

by Associated Press

THE HAGUE, Netherlands Aug 13, 2018 - 12:00 am GMT+3

A man detained on suspicion of throwing home-made explosive devices at the Turkish consulate in the Dutch capital is refusing to talk about the incident to detectives, police said Monday.

The 34-year-old Dutch man was detained following the incident on Saturday night and remains in custody, but he has not yet spoken about it to detectives interviewing him as they try to establish exactly what happened and a possible motive, police spokeswoman Marijke Stor said.

Police fired a warning shot as they arrested the man, whose identity was not released. He has not yet been charged with any offenses.

Consul general Tolga Orkun told Anadolu Agency that a man hurled three home-made explosive devices at the building on Amsterdam's Museum Square. The building is housed next door to the American consulate on the busy square near Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum.

Orkun said security camera footage shows the first device bursting into flames in the building's garden. A second, which Orkun described as a Molotov cocktail, did not catch fire. Another device also did not fully detonate.

Stor said there was a small fire that was quickly extinguished.

The incident comes as the Netherlands and Turkey are seeking to repair diplomatic relations that were severely damaged in March 2017 after the Dutch government barred two Turkish ministers from campaigning to expatriate Turks ahead of a referendum that changed Turkey's governance to an executive presidency.
