Turkish star to make history

by Hakan Baş

Vakıfbank and Turkish national player Naz Aydemir Akyol is set to become a record breaker in two categories in the Final Four of CEV Denizbank Volleyball Champions League this weekend

The Final Four tournament of the 2015 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League for Women will be held on April 4 in Poland. The tournament, which spans two consecutive days, has another meaning for Turkish female volleyball star Naz Aydemir Akyol as she is set to break two records during the Final Four to be held in Szczecin, Poland. The Turkish national team player Akyol will break the record for the most amount of appearances in the competition as well as becoming the first player to play in seven consecutive Final Four history. The 25-year-old player represented Eczacıbaşı Zentiva, who came fourth in the tournament held in 2008-09. In the 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons, while she was playing for Fenerbahçe, her team came in second, third and, finally, first in three straight years. She wore the Fener jersey in all of those seasons. Since 2012-13 season she has been playing for Vakıfbank. In 2012-2013, she won the championship one more time with Vakıfbank. And last season, Vakıfbank came second in the tournament. Akyol will make history this weekend whatever the result will be.

Meanwhile, the CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League for Men was held this weekend at the Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin, crowning another record-breaking season for Europe's elite competition. The CEV and title sponsor DenizBank are evidently pleased with the show that was delivered on Saturday and Sunday in Germany's "Volleyball temple" and they are already looking forward to the third season of their partnership once the 2016 edition gets underway on July 2 with the drawing of lots for the League Round taking place at the Hofburg Palace in Vienna.

"We have just witnessed a terrific volleyball show in Berlin that once again delivered what all of our stakeholders - fans, media, sponsors and partners alike - expect from the final round of Europe's elite competition: a real Volleyball party unfolding both on and off the court," CEV President Andre Meyer says. "We will continue to join forces with our title sponsor DenizBank to live up to everyone's expectations and raise the bar even higher for the 2016 edition of the CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League."

The CEO of DenizBank, Hakan Ateş, said, "We are proud to have witnessed the second season of this important sports event that we have decided to support in order for Turkish volleyball to become a global brand. As we attended the matches of the Final Four, we all felt the great excitement in Berlin, which is something that lies at the heart of major sports events. From now on, we will continue to work hard to crown our sports investments, which occupy a substantial share in our approach towards social responsibility, and to contribute to the development of Turkish sport and sportspeople."

As they have embarked on a mission to support the development of Turkish sport and to extend its culture to all members of society, DenizBank joined forces with the CEV back in 2013 announcing their title sponsorship of the CEV Volleyball Champions League for three years. The 2014 edition of the men's competition just came to an end on Sunday, March 29, with the gold and bronze medal matches played at the Max-Schmeling-Halle. The season got started last November and more than 100 matches were contested to eventually determine the winner of Europe's elite club competition. The partnership with the CEV has raised the brand of DenizBank and its investments in sport to a European level and has been acknowledged as a substantial boost to the sustainable development of Turkish volleyball. "We are just about to draw the line at the end of a season that was once again crowned with unprecedented success. We just reached the climax with the highly successful men's Final Four tournament held in Berlin and we look forward to another highlight this coming weekend once the women's Finals take place in Szczecin, Poland," CEV President Andre Meyer continues.

"Europe's Volleyball family is pleased with the cooperation we have established with DenizBank, a partner that shares our long-term mission to foster a sustainable growth of volleyball across the whole continent. Together with DenizBank we are striving for excellence both on and off the Volleyball court and are committed to raise the level of Europe's flagship competition to new heights. I already look forward to the next season that will get underway on July 2 in Vienna once we draw the teams that will enter the 2016 edition of a competition that has become a benchmark of quality and excellence for many other international sports events."
