Formula One championship leader Kimi Antonelli produced a stunning comeback to win his home Italian Grand Prix on Sunday, charging from 19th on the grid to victory at Monza and dealing a major blow to Mercedes teammate and closest title rival George Russell.
The 20-year-old became the first Italian to win at Monza since Ludovico Scarfiotti drove a Ferrari to victory in 1966. His triumph was also the 50th Formula One win by an Italian driver since the world championship began in 1950.
Russell took the lead on the second lap, shortly before Ferrari's Charles Leclerc crashed heavily and brought out a red flag that halted the race for around 30 minutes. The Briton ultimately finished second, 3.857 seconds behind Antonelli, after his Mercedes teammate closed rapidly on fresher tires in the closing stages.
Max Verstappen finished a distant third for Red Bull.
Russell had hoped to capitalize on Antonelli's engine penalties, which forced the Italian to start on the back row, and cut into his 59-point championship advantage. Instead, Antonelli extended his lead to 66 points after 13 rounds, strengthening his bid to become Formula One's youngest champion and Italy's first since Alberto Ascari in 1953.
"Oh my God, oh my God," Antonelli screamed over the team radio as he took the checkered flag for his seventh win of the season, giving the home crowd something to celebrate after Ferrari failed to make the podium.
"I could have never imagined to be here today. But we managed to pull it off, and I'm really, really happy," he said later after stepping onto the podium to huge cheers.
The Italian had carved his way through the field and repeatedly swapped the lead with Russell before pitting during a virtual safety car period while his teammate stayed out. Antonelli cut an 8.9-second gap to less than a second in 10 laps but then appeared to have wasted his efforts.
Trying to make a pass, Antonelli went into the gravel with four laps remaining but recovered and retook the lead on lap 51 of 53 before pulling away.
Russell said he did not have fresh enough tires to fight back on a scorching afternoon that was declared a heat hazard.
"It was looking like a pretty strong race from us, and then I was just struggling with the tires toward the end. Obviously, we did the whole race on that one hard tire," he said.
"I thought we were both going to stay out. I was surprised to see him pitting. In the end, it was a roll of the dice both ways."
McLaren's reigning champion Lando Norris took fourth from teammate Oscar Piastri on the last lap but is now 96 points behind Antonelli.
Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton was sixth after starting fourth and dropping to 10th when he was forced into the gravel by Leclerc while trying to pass on the opening lap.
Pierre Gasly, the initial pole sitter for Renault-owned Alpine, was seventh, followed by Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad in eighth and Alpine's Franco Colapinto in ninth. Racing Bulls stand-in Yuki Tsunoda completed the scoring positions in 10th.
Antonelli started on hard tires and had already moved up to 12th when the red flag came out. Russell was on pole for the restart, allowing everyone to change tires, with Antonelli switching to mediums and Gasly lining up second. Colapinto, remarkably for the Argentine, was fourth.
The first attempt to restart the race was aborted after Tsunoda was out of position. When the race finally got underway, Colapinto seized third before overcooking the first corner, tracking across the gravel and dropping to 16th.
Antonelli was sixth after 10 laps, third after 13 and second after 16.
The Italian passed Russell for the first time on lap 18, but the lead changed hands repeatedly, with Antonelli moving ahead before Russell passed him again on the same lap at a circuit where slipstreaming is a key part of the strategy.
Antonelli and Verstappen, who had also led briefly, then took advantage of a virtual safety car on lap 29 after Aston Martin's Lance Stroll stopped on track. The pair pitted and returned in sixth and seventh, while Russell stayed out on the hard tires.
The next race is the Spanish Grand Prix next weekend at Madrid's new Madring circuit.
