Facebook and Google have added functions to their online platforms to help people find friends and relatives caught in the Nepal earthquake. Social networking site Facebook introduced its Safety Check feature, enabling users to mark their own status as "safe," or let their Facebook friends update their status for them. Search giant Google's Person Finder allows users to post information about a third party, for example if the user had managed to reach someone in the area by telephone. Available in six languages, including English, Nepalese and Chinese, it was tracking some 5200 records at the time of writing. With telecommunications in the capital Kathmandu partly damaged by the quake and intermittent, tourists have reportedly been using the functions to let their families know they are safe. Website Tomnod, which last year launched an online mapping project to help find missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370, has also started a site allowing users to map damage to buildings and roads from the quake.
