HATAY — The local administration in Payas, a district of the southern Turkish province of Hatay, put up a sign next to a 1350-year-old olive tree to caution against vandalism.
The sign warns even those touching the tree will be subject to up to five years in prison, along with a TL 5,000 fine.
The tree is categorized as a historical monument and the sentence cited in the sign is in line with a law for protection of monuments, though such signs are rare.
