İzmir police have detained five individuals suspected of having links to Al Qaeda following raids across five provinces of Turkey. The operation was targeted at individuals who contacted Z.Ç. -- a suspect jailed for a year after being convicted as an Al Qaeda member, before leaving the country -- via e-mail, a police source said.
Operations were conducted in the early hours of the morning, with the center of operations based in İzmir but detentions were also made in İstanbul, Adana, Manisa and Kayseri. A large number of video footage of Afghanistan and Chechnya were seized during searches in the homes of the suspects. The police said that operations were still continuing and that there could be more detentions in the days ahead.
