Prime Minister Erdoğan expressed that the events transpiring in Egypt, Tunisia and Libya are a result of years of tensioning building up and stated, “If you rule a country for 41 years your public no longer has any freedom.”
Prime Minister Tayyip Erdoğan qualified the recent developments in Libya following uprisings in both Tunisia and Egypt as a result of 'political gas building-up.' Erdoğan stated "what is happening now is the result of tension from years, and tens of years. I say this, and please excuse me, but we could in a sense say that this is the political building up of gas. You run a country for 41 years, 32 years or 30 years. When you are in power, your public does not have its own volition. Or you can deceive the public by saying they do.' Prime Minister Erdoğan went on to express that he is hopeful for the Middle East and that if the public has belief then the transformation to change in these countries will transpire even faster. In regards to the possible arrest of these leaders that he has met and spoken with in the past, Prime Minister Erdoğan states, "Thank goodness we live in Turkey."
Speaking to SABAH journalists during a special television broadcast on Atv, Erdoğan went on to provide the following answers during last night's interview: WE HAVE 30,000 PEOPLE THERE: These flames are engulfing all of Africa and the Gulf nations wave by wave.
We are constantly following what is happening. Of late, Libya constituted a very significant place. We have approximately 30,000 people in Libya. All of these citizens work in our worksites there. From architects to engineers, to construction workers, they are all working there and it is an issue of significant figures. The combined total of the work they are doing there is approximately 32 million dollars. We have initiated a historical level of evacuations. Other nations are not embarking on this level of evacuation. A total of 7,352 citizens have returned. That figure will reach to nine thousand with the military planes we sent yesterday.
WE HAVE NOT CUT COMMUNICATION WITH GADDAFI: Meanwhile, we still have ships on their way. Our citizens there will most likely be evacuated to Tunisia first, where they will transfer to flights that will bring them to Turkey. We are receiving requests from other nations to transport their citizens. We evacuated approximately 50 other nationals last night and brought them to Turkey. We have not yet officially cut communication with Gaddafi, who is still the head of Libya. I have spoken to Gaddafi three times now. We are also continuing to communicate with the opposition. They have not yet acted against our citizens in Bengazi.
