Turkish National Police recently introduced a new unit on wheels: Bikeriding policemen, in an effort to decrease environmental pollution by police cars.
So far, 150 bicycles are delivered to 10 cities including Istanbul, İzmir and Antalya for "seagull" teams. Bicycle teams will provide security at parks and beaches and in locations inaccessible by cars or motorcycles. The teams will provide a rapid response to any incident in pedestrian-only areas of cities.
Besides being an effective method for policing crowded areas with no access to vehicles, Turkish police authorities say the bicycles will contribute to decreasing environmental pollution due to harmful emissions by the motor vehicles of Turkish National Police.
