A fish gene bank aiming to preserve species as well as their breeding will be established in northern Turkey by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture in the Black Sea province of Trabzon. The bank will be the first of its kind in the country and will become operative in 2016. Sperm, tissue and DNA of endangered fish species will be preserved in the facility, which will cost about TL 14 million ($6.02 million). The facility will also be home to projects aiming to increase the sustainability of fish species and the classification of species, a museum and a laboratory where research can be conducted on diseases affecting fish and other aquatic creatures.
