Ministry of Culture and Tourism officials said TL 20 million ($7.1 million) was allocated for archaeological excavations across the country this year and more will likely be channeled in the coming months, surpassing only the TL 1.5 million that was allocated in 2013.
Melik Ayaz, a ministry official, said the funding for excavations in the archaeologically rich country for this year may surpass TL 20 million as they gradually present funds for new digs. "The funding was TL 1.5 million in 2013 and it was raised to about 49 million last year. It increased every year. There have been excavations at 519 sites last year and the total number may rise to 530 this year," he said.
