According to a study by the Westminster University Political Science Institute, English parents are stricter with their children than their counterparts in the rest of Europe.
The survey of more than 18,000 children within the 7-15 age group in 16 countries between 2010-2012 showed that English parents also tend to restrict their children more in terms of activities.
Director of Political Science Institute Ben Shaw said that the research was carried out independently in each country, and due to limited financial support, the completion of the study took more time than predicted.
The results show English parents feel discomfort walking or playing games with their children even in their own neighborhood. It was revealed that English parents mostly worry about possible traffic accidents and dangers that come up after dark. While English parents tend to restrict the activities of their children, Finnish parents are the most non-restrictive, according to the study. German, Norwegian, Swedish and Danish parents came after them. Finnish parents generally allow their over-7-year-old children to use a bicycle or to go somewhere other than their school.
Experts assert that activities such as walking in a neighborhood contribute to child development and health.
