The government is involved in intense international dialogue with the U.S. in an effort to address the growing Syrian crisis and its humanitarian repercussions, with Foreign Minister Feridun Sinirlioğlu speaking with his U.S. counterpart John Kerry over the weekend on the matter.
Kerry, who was in Germany on Sunday to talk about the refugee crisis with local officials, is said to have requested a phone conversation with Sinirlioğlu. According to diplomatic sources, Kerry agreed with Sinirlioğlu that the root of the refugee crisis, the civil war in Syria, should be addressed first. Kerry, who has been consulting with Russian officials on the increasing involvement of Russian soldiers in anti-ISIS operations, is said to have argued that military operations against ISIS by the coalition should be stepped up a notch. Kerry and Sinirlioğlu, who will accompany Prime Minister Ahmer Davutoğlu to New York to attend the opening of the new U.N. General Assembly session later this week, are scheduled to meet during the proceedings, sources said.
