Turkish security forces kill 16 PKK terrorists in southeast, 455 in total

Turkish security forces have killed 15 terrorists in southeastern Cizre, and one terrorist in Sur disrict, the military announced on Tuesday.

According to a statement released by the Turkish General Staff, a total of 352 terrorists have been killed in the ongoing operations in Şırnak's Cizre district.

Meanwhile, a total of 103 terrorists have been killed in Diyarbakır's Sur district, adding up to a total of 455 terrorists.

Weapons and explosives belonging to the terrorist organization have also been confiscated by Turkish security forces.

The statement also noted that two terrorists fleeing the shelters of PKK in Syria have surrendered to Turkish officials in Şanlıurfa's Ceylanpınar bordergate.

The government has intensified its counterterrorism operations following the recent attacks carried out by the PKK, which is recognized as a terrorist organization by the U.S., the EU and Turkey. Formed in 1978, the terrorist group has been fighting the government for an independent state since the early 2000's. The group then shifted its goal to autonomy in predominately Kurdish inhabited regions of Turkey. The PKK announced on July 11 that the cease-fire that was declared via a message from the PKK's imprisoned leader Abdullah Öcalan in 2013 has ended.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu have underscored that Turkey will continue to carry out anti-terrorism operations until all terrorists are eliminated.
