Istanbul continues to have some of the worst traffic offenders in the country, with 41,498 drivers receiving various fines in the week between Jan. 18 and Jan. 24.
According to figures released by the Istanbul Police Department Traffic Bureau, offenders violated traffic rules on speaking on the phone while driving, driving under the influence of alcohol, violating parking rules, carrying more passengers or heavier loads than prescribed and ignoring traffic lights. During the same time, there were 522 collisions, two of which caused deaths and 166 more injuries. A total of four people died and 225 more were injured in these accidents.
