Ordu, a city of 728,000 people situated on the scenic Black Sea coast of Turkey, nowadays boasts a new feature: Free, unlimited wireless Internet access. The municipality of Ordu claims they have offered the largest free Wi-Fi coverage in Europe since the service was launched last year. With about 1 million accesses monthly, it may also be the busiest among small cities offering free Wi-Fi.
The city is originally providing the free service as part of its Traffic Electronic Control System (TEDES).
"We have a five-kilometer long Wi-Fi coverage space with a diameter of 500 meters here in Ordu. There is not another city in Turkey or Europe offering such a service," Ordu Mayor Enver Yılmaz said. Yılmaz pointed out that service access is especially popular on the coastal strip of Altınordu district where locals and tourists enjoy the Black Sea landscape while indulging in free Internet access.
