With rising interest in drones, Turkish authorities are looking to better regulate their use. Starting from August, pilots flying drones for commercial use will be required to undergo training and obtain a certificate. The state-run Directorate-General of Civil Aviation announced that pilots would be required to attend training at schools authorized by the directorate.
Commercial drone use is limited in Turkey, although it is expected to increase in parallel with growth of e-commerce.
In May, authorities introduced a ban on the remote-controlled vehicles, which increasingly pose a risk to aviation and due to potential use by terrorist organizations. Drone pilots are now required to register with the aviation authority. Unregistered pilots face fines up to TL 17,000 ($5,857). Drones have previously endangered flight safety, especially last year in Istanbul. Several civilian drones used to capture the images and videos of airport activities in the city were spotted on multiple instances at the city's Atatürk International Airport by pilots. Its use also raised privacy questions when a drone was discovered taking images outside a girls' dormitory in Istanbul.
