The number of generals has dropped by almost 43 percent since the attempted coup by the Gülenist Terror Group (FETÖ) on July 15, according to figures recently released by the military. A large number of commissioned and noncommissioned officers were dismissed as per Supreme Military Council (YAŞ) decisions from the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) after July 15.
The new figures include only the land, navy and air forces commands as the gendarmerie and Coast Guard commands were transferred to the Interior Ministry as part of the government's major restructuring initiative in the past two months.According to figures as of Sept. 11, the number of generals and admirals is 206, compared to the pre-July 15 figure of 358. The number of officers in the TSK dropped from 39,353 to 29,946 since July 15. The number of noncommissioned officers is down to 67,646 from the pre-July 15 figure of 96,593.
The Turkish military, which is still largely a conscript army, had 311,245 conscripts on May of this year. With the transfer of the coast guards and the gendarmerie, it now has 182,784 conscripts.
The figures also show that the total number of TSK personnel has dropped from a high of 561,496 in May to the current number of 351,176.
