Turkey hosts some 5,075 foundations with more than 1.02 million people working as volunteers, a report by Anadolu Agency based on figures from Turkey's Foundations Directorate General, shows.
The report indicated a gradual increase in the number of foundations, from only 604 in 1980 to the current number.
The majority of foundations work to help the disadvantaged while only 19 focus on environmental protection.
