A group of high school girls is breathing new life into old wedding gowns with the project "Your Wedding is From Us," in the eastern Turkish city of Van.
Fourteen students from Vestel Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School have volunteered to collect old wedding gowns and redesign them as part of a fashion design course.
School principal, Elif Yörük, told Anadolu Agency about the project, which is taking place in the school's workshops, "We are hoping to touch the hearts of people with our projects. We plan our projects taking into consideration the financial impossibilities of our teachers and students," she said.
"We also want to adopt projects that we think are useful for our city. We will ensure that every young girl will live her dream of wearing a white wedding dress," Yörük added.
Describing the process of obtaining the gowns used in the project, Yörük said that they communicate with individuals who no longer have use for their wedding dresses and who do not want to keep them at home because they occupy a lot of space.
The second-hand gowns are then taken to the workshops for repair and alterations with the help of teachers and students. At the beginning of wedding season, the students will present the wedding gowns to the brides.
After the wedding ceremonies, the school will take the dresses back and redesign them for other brides.
