Stockbreeders on the mountains of Beyşehir district of Konya province are struggling to raise their sheep in difficult winter conditions.
In the Yeşildağ neighborhood of the district, the stockbreeders are doing their best to protect their animals from the freezing cold and difficult conditions.
Emre Eren said that he spends most of his day in the fields and stays in a one-room house next to a shelter where he cares for his sheep. Eren says he uses solar panels for electricity and watches a lot of television to pass time in the long winter months. He explained that he is happy to spend his days with animals.
"When everywhere is covered with snow, the animals spend most of the day in closed areas. However, we take the sheep out of their shelter for water. Then they graze and benefit from the rivers, walking on snow every day. As long as we can keep the roads open, we can take them to get water. When the snow accumulates in storms and heavy rain, we use wells and water tanks. When we are in real trouble, we melt snow on the stove. We have 37 newborn lambs this winter. It is worth seeing their feeding time with their mothers," he said.
Explaining the difficult conditions, Eren added, "We heard that wolves attacked some of the pens in the surrounding area. We have dogs, but we still worry. We are in the mountains, but we are happy and peaceful. I learned this job from my father and continue to make a living from it."
