Police confiscated at least 1041 ancient coins and detained a suspect trying to sell the coins in Turkey's southwestern Denizli province, reports said Thursday.
According to reports, gendarmerie teams in Çivril district carried out a raid upon receiving intelligence that the suspect, identified as A. A. would try to sell ancient coins.
They found 1041 coins from different periods, and handed these over to the Museum Directorate of Denizli, reports said.
Denizli has been occupied since prehistoric times and has been a home to Greek and Roman civilizations.
Thousands of anti-smuggling operations are carried across Turkey every year to hinder the illegal sale of historical objects and protect the country's rich cultural heritage.
