During the first 10 months of the 2026 water year – from Oct. 1, 2025 to July 31, 2026 – rainfall across Türkiye was 30% above the long-term average and 76% higher than the same period last year, reaching its highest level in 66 years.
According to data compiled by Anadolu Agency (AA) from the Turkish State Meteorological Service’s 10-Month Areal Precipitation Report for the 2026 Water Year, Türkiye received an average of 693 kilograms (1,528 pounds) of rainfall per square meter during the period.
The long-term water-year average, calculated using data from 1991 to 2020, is 533.7 kilograms (1,176.61 pounds) per square meter, while 393.2 kilograms (866.86 pounds) was recorded during the same period last year.
Rainfall during the first 10 months of the 2026 water year was therefore 30% above normal and 76% higher than a year earlier, making it the wettest 10-month period in 66 years.
Compared with the long-term average, rainfall fell by up to 20% in areas around Tekirdağ, Bursa, Yalova, Kastamonu, Malatya, Gümüşhane, Bayburt, Trabzon, Rize, Artvin, Ardahan and Erzurum. In some areas around Siirt, Şırnak and Van, rainfall increased by more than 80%.
Rainfall in all seven regions was above both the long-term average and the level recorded during the same period last year.
The largest increase over normal was recorded in Southeastern Anatolia, at 47%, followed by the Mediterranean at 45%, Eastern Anatolia at 33%, the Aegean at 29%, Central Anatolia at 28%, the Black Sea at 18% and Marmara at 11%.
Compared with the same period last year, rainfall more than doubled in the Mediterranean, Central Anatolia and Southeastern Anatolia. It increased 79% in the Aegean, 74% in Eastern Anatolia, 62% in Marmara and 22% in the Black Sea region.
Cumulative rainfall during the first 10 months of the water year reached its highest level in 66 years in the Mediterranean region, 38 years in Eastern Anatolia, 15 years in Central Anatolia, 11 years in the Aegean and 10 years in the Black Sea region.
Rize recorded the highest rainfall among Türkiye's provinces, at 1,347.7 kilograms per square meter, while Iğdır recorded the lowest, at 370.4 kilograms.
Water-year rainfall was near normal in Bursa and Sinop, below normal in Tekirdağ and Artvin, and above normal in all other provinces.
Adana, Düzce, Hatay, Isparta, Izmir, Kahramanmaraş, Osmaniye, Tokat, Manisa and Niğde recorded their highest 10-month water-year rainfall totals in 66 years.
Bingöl, Bitlis, Kayseri, Sivas and Tunceli recorded their highest rainfall levels in 38 years. Van reached a 32-year high, while Bartın and Zonguldak recorded 31-year highs. Gaziantep saw its highest rainfall level in 30 years.
Regionally, rainfall during the 10-month period totaled 924.9 kilograms per square meter in the Mediterranean, 769.6 in Southeastern Anatolia, 740.4 in the Aegean, 709.9 in the Black Sea, 678.9 in Eastern Anatolia, 673.6 in Marmara and 480 in Central Anatolia.
