The majority of the counter-terrorism operations that began on March 14 in the southeastern province of Şırnak have been completed with security forces purging five neighborhoods of PKK terrorists.
Security sources said that 386 PKK fighters had been killed so far as clashes continue in three other neighborhoods in the province. They also said that terrorists use houses in neighborhoods as emplacements and pose a threat to security forces by planting explosives in houses and firing from holes that they made in walls.
Explaining that 86 percent of the operations have been accomplished on the 67th day of the operations, sources said the PKK has lost its capability to maneuver in the area, as they had done previously at night.
Elsewhere, the military announced that nine terrorists were killed in the Nusaybin district of the southeastern province of Mardin and two terrorists were also killed in the Yüksekova district of southeastern Hakkari on Tuesday. In the same province, nine terrorists were also killed in a two-day operation in the Dağlıca district, a mountainous region, while security forces seized ammunition from a cave used as a stock and shelter by the PKK.
Media reported yesterday that Turkish warplanes hit PKK targets in southeastern Turkey and Northern Iraq, killing at least 10 terrorists.
The military carried out the airstrikes on PKK positions on Monday and Tuesday in the mountainous regions of Hakkari and in Northern Iraq, where the PKK has camps near the Turkish border in the Avaşin and Basyan regions.
The PKK, which is listed as a terrorist organization by the U.S. and EU, resumed its 30-year armed campaign against the Turkish state in July 2015. Since then, more than 450 security personnel, including troops, police officers and village guards and more than 4,500 PKK terrorists have been killed in counter-terrorism operations across Turkey and Northern Iraq.
