The Parliament building suffered the most extensive damage during the July 15 coup attempt organized by the Gülenist Terror Organization (FETÖ). The chamber is expected to convene the Parliamentary Security and Intelligence Commission on Wednesday for the first time after the coup attempt. It is also expected that a "Parliamentary Research Commission" will be established to investigate the coup attempt in accordance with motions from the four parties in Parliament.
At the meeting, activity reports from the National Intelligence Organization (MİT), the gendarmerie and police will be under review, while deficiencies in intelligence voiced by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım are expected to be at the core of discussions.
Motions from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party), People's Republican Party (CHP), Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) are expected to be gathered together and discussed, with representatives from all four parties participating.
The motions are expected to be followed by the establishment of a"Parliamentary Research Commission," which will have the right to intervene in the judicial process and to interrogate anyone that it considers necessary for the investigation, whether in jail or not, including high ranking officers or enlistees. The meeting's minutes will be taken concerning the coup attempt and questions such as how the FETÖ was able to infiltrate the government to such an extent.
The ruling AK Party motion says legal investigations are necessary to illuminate the details of the attempted coup, remarking that it had quite different characteristics than the successful coups Turkey saw in 1960, 1971, 1980, 1997 and the judicial coup attempt in 2007.
