Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf took aim at U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday, sharing an image that parodied his signature political slogan with the phrase “Make America Hungry Again.”

Ghalibaf posted the image on social media in response to Trump sharing a Newsmax report on his Truth Social platform that inaccurately quoted the Iranian parliament speaker as saying, "We Are Hungry, We Cannot Survive.”

In a play on Trump’s "Make America Great Again” slogan, Ghalibaf posted a graphic bearing the phrase "Make America Hungry Again” that also featured statistics on hunger and food insecurity in the U.S.

Without naming Trump, Ghalibaf wrote: "You cannot cover up your defeats with baseless claims.”

Last Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced his intention to launch what he called "the most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country,” describing his maximum-pressure campaign against Iran as "economic warfare and isolation on an unprecedented scale.”

He also said countries that provide Tehran with an economic "lifeline” - through their financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities - would face severe economic consequences.

The U.S. and Israel launched attacks on Iran in late February, prompting Tehran to retaliate against Israel and U.S. military assets across the region before a cease-fire agreement was reached in April.

In mid-June, Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding calling for freedom of navigation in the Hormuz Strait, but the deal’s implementation later stalled amid persistent differences.

Last month, the U.S. resumed its attacks on Iran, while Tehran responded by targeting U.S. military facilities and equipment in a number of Arab countries.
