The U.S. has carried out attacks on the site of an under-construction Iranian nuclear power plant in Darkhovin, local media reported, in an attack Tehran said violated international law.
The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) condemned the strike using several projectiles at the site in southwestern Khuzestan Province near the Iraqi border, Iran's IRNA reported.
U.S. forces "in an aggressive and brutal act contrary to international law, attacked the under-construction Darkhovin nuclear power plant ... with a number of projectiles Sunday," the organization said in a statement carried by state TV.
Later Sunday, the International Atomic Energy Agency said that it was investigating reports of the overnight attack on the Darkhovin nuclear power plant.
The facility was in the very early stages of construction and contained no nuclear material when last inspected, the agency said.
Iran announced the start of construction at the plant in late 2022. The planned pressurized water reactor has been designed with a generating capacity of 300 megawatts.
Plans to build the facility near the Karun River were first announced more than 15 years ago. The plant was expected to be completed around 2030.
Iran's only operational nuclear power plant is located in the Gulf port city of Bushehr.
