Turkey's top football division Super League suspended one week for solidarity with Fenerbahçe

Turkey's top football division Spor Toto Super League games have been postponed for one week following Saturday's armed attack on Fenerbahçe's team bus.

The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) had an extraordinary meeting on Monday following the shooting of the Fenerbahçe team bus by a gunman or gunmen after the team's 5-1 victory at Rizespor late Saturday. The federation decided to suspend the Spor Toto Super League for one week on Monday. Youth and Sport Minister Akif Çağatay Kılıç, TFF President Yıldırım Demirören, Turkish Union of Clubs president Göksel Gümüşdağ and club presidents met at the Riva facilities of the TFF in Istanbul. After the meeting Yıldırım Demirören said, "It was a terror attack. The suspension of the Spor Toto Super League was decided as a result of the consensus of all the clubs." The Turkish Union of Clubs president Gümüşdağ stressed that the decision shows solidarity with Fenerbahçe. "It's for solidarity. It has nothing to do with any security problem in Turkey. There is no securtiy problem in our country," he emphasized.

Fenerbahçe approved the decision saying, "They probably made a gesture." However before the TFF meeting, the club administration convened a special meeting, after which Fenerbahçe administrator Deniz Aytöre said, "We don't want the suspension of the Spor Toto Super League, we want security of life. We don't intend to play league games until the armed attack is solved. "No league title is more important than human life. We definitely don't want any of our rivals' footballers' lives to be in danger. And we don't want the league to be suspended. What's important to us is that a secure environment is provided for us, the security of our lives. The armed assault is a deplorable incident. It's unforgettable for us. The mystery of the attack must be solved as soon as possible. Or else, we don't intend to play games until the attack is solved," he continued.

Previously, the Spor Toto Super League match between Fenerbahçe and Bursaspor on April 13 had already been postponed. The TFF announced that Fenerbahçe's Ziraat Turkish Cup match against Mersin İdmanyurdu on April 7 and the Spor Toto Super League match against Bursaspor on April 13 have been postponed until a further date. It is reported that both games' dates and kick-off times will be announced in the upcoming days. Meanwhile, the Governor of Trabzon, Abdül Celil Öz - visiting the wounded driver of the bus Ufuk Kıran in hospital - said, "The driver's health status is fine, he woke up and is recuperating. Gunshots and the evidence show that the perpetrator(s) shot twice. The police continue their work to find the perpetrator(s)," Öz added.

Elsewhere, four Marseille supporters have been taken into police custody after violent clashes between fans and police forces in the lead-up to the French football league match between arch-rivals Marseille and Paris-Saint Germain, police said yesterday. Eight police officers were injured in the incident that saw groups of fans clash with police and stewards at the Stade Velodrome ahead of Sunday's late evening game. A group of Marseille fans also threw stones at the PSG bus on its arrival at the Velodrome, breaking the vehicle's windscreen but injuring nobody on board.
