Turkey's third biggest city İzmir, has been hit by flooding as the heavy rainfall, which started on Monday evening, has gained increasing strength, leading to floods across Çeşme district. Fire crew are responding to the emergency in Ilıca and Alaçatı neighborhoods, which are popular tourist destinations.

Prime Ministry Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency "AFAD" in Turkish staff have also been sent to the region.

Dozens of homes, workplaces and vehicles submerged because of the flood while some residents who were stuck in their apartments were saved by boats.

A pregnant woman who was stuck at home was taken to the hospital after being saved by the AFAD staff. Water evacuation operations have been continuing for many hours.

According to information obtained by Second Regional Directorate of Meteorology, the amount of rainfall to have fallen per square meter in Çeşme has been 168.3 kilograms in the last 24 hours.

The last time the city has witnessed such a large amount of rainfall was five years ago, when 165.2 kilograms fell per square meter. Residents and tradesmen have also been trying to get rid of the water in their homes and workplaces.

No loss of life has been reported due to the flooding while loss of property will be later on determined by a special team. Heavy rainfall is expected to continue until Tuesday noon.
